The anti-Santeria sentiment was already in place before long before May 1987, when Ernesto Pichardo began the licensing procedure for his church. However, tensions boiled over when the presence of a sacrifice practicing Santeria church was made widely known. The resulting ordinances banning animal sacrifice and the six year battle regarding its constitutionality concluded 17 years ago, in Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye vs. City of Hialeah, but the legacy of the Supreme Court’s decision still continues today.
